Happy Earth Day!
At Wild Edge Farm we are inspired and very much heartened by the chance to join local efforts to build community around care of the Earth. We will be delivering our pre-ordered Farm Fresh Food Bags this Saturday, April 25, from 12-1 PM at our pickup location at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church parking lot across from the library. This week in celebration of the 50th birthday of Earth Day, we invite you to walk, bike or bus to pick up your food. It’s a great way to slow down, enjoy your neighbors and neighborhoods, and flourish in the great outdoors – even when it’s raining. In noting the positive impact of these daily actions on the health of our planet we have a few gifts of gratitude from the Wild Edge that we would like to send home with you.
In conjunction with the Farm Fresh Food Bags Saturday from 12-1 PM and the 50th birthday of Earth Day, it seems appropriate to celebrate Earth’s bounty and steadfastness – even in the midst of our current uncertainty – by offering 50 free kale seedlings and 50 free potato starts for Port Angeles eaters to plant in their yards and gardens for year-round eating. You do not need to purchase anything to receive these starts, so spread the word.
Short on flour? Potatoes make a great staple! Also, with one or two kale plants a family can eat greens all summer, fall, winter and into spring. We have been inspired by our bed of kale plants that has fed so many Port Angeles mouths over the past nine months. The plants are now offering their yellow flowers, precious to the bees and other pollinators, as they bolt and prepare to grow fresh seed for new life. And so the bounty continues.
On this 50th birthday of Earth Day, we want to thank the hardworking and creative members of Compassion Clallam County, Interfaith Community of Clallam County, SisterLand Farms, Interfaith Earthcare Coalition, Clallam Tree Alliance and Olympic Climate Action for planning community-building activities for Earth Day 2020 — and then redesigning them to fit our current needs for physical distancing.
We are in this together!
