Wild sourdough
So much great inspiration circulating these days about sourdough baking and its many benefits. And with time on our hands, it sounds like many of us are baking. (If only we had more flour!)
At Wild Edge Farm we are prepping for tomorrow’s celebration of Earth Week at our Farm Fresh Food Bag Saturday pickup. We will be thanking each of you Port Angeles eaters who walk, bike or ride the bus to our farm stand at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church across from the library tomorrow. We have some gifts to send home with you and sourdough starter is one of them. To encourage you on your baking journey, here are some great websites that have been a help to me.
Local Washingtonian Victoria Redhed Miller published an article in Grit magazine that I found several years ago: “Simple Sourdough Bread.” I love how she describes sourdough cooking as an opportunity to bake with no pressure to fit a particular schedule. She includes a couple of recipes and also teaches you how to begin and maintain a sourdough starter.
More recently Jim heard an NPR story on the joy of sourdough cooking where mistakes are actually quite valuable. Read or listen here. In looking that one up, I came across two others that look quite interesting. “Tips for Bread Baking for Those Staying at Home” and “Sourdough Hands: How Bakers and Bread Are a Microbial Match.” Which led me further into “Wild Sourdough — A Science of Sourdough Project”
Finally, if you’re a lighthearted baker, try “Dave and the Sourdough Starter” by “Vinyl Cafe” at Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). It’s a “wait for it…” recording. You may want to fast forward to the actual story.
Enjoy that wild sourdough baking, let me know what you think of these finds, and be sure to pass on any great recipes of your own.
