Workin’ in a Winter Wonderland
With most of our animals living comfortably in the barn these past weeks, we are enjoying a lighter work load.
The garden, too, is at rest. We planted the last of the garlic just before Christmas, then covered those beds plus the remaining winter carrot beds and the fava beans with a thick blanket of hay. Add a foot of snow to that, and they should come through the cold just fine.
We do have three remaining groupings of pigs still on pasture in the snow, and these involve daily feeding and watering. While freezing temperatures make watering a challenge, the snow has created a fun way to haul feed and hay.
And no one’s complaining about a week’s worth of great sledding, or the surrounding beauty of a winter wonderland.
Happy New Year to all!
